Lisa Atkins just got back from a trip to Majok Goi in South Sudan and talks about her friend Angar Dut Akol Ruay's struggle with giardia and a lack of clean water. South Sudan is the newest country in the world, having formed in 2011 after decades of civil war with Sudan. Massive displacement from the war has left the economy in shambles and the country struggles from widespread food scarcity.

Codi Peterson talks about an experience he had with a woman in South Sudan who had to be carried in a wheelbarrow because of her polio. Her family did not have access to clean water and had to walk hours every day just to bring home dirty, contaminated water.

Volunteer Isaac Peterson talks about his recent trip to South Sudan and the impacts of not having clean water. Over 59% of people in South Sudan don't have access to clean water.

We always talk about how dangerous dirty water is because of the parasites and pollution, but we can't forget how dangerous the wildlife is! Larry wanted to experience first hand what the children of South Sudan go through getting water for their families, so he went and wrestled some alligators.

Larry Chatterley is a cyclist and philanthropist from Denver, Colorado. After learning about GEMS from a family member, he decided to raise money to build village wells in South Sudan by riding the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route this summer.

Mass flooding in South Sudan in 2020 further exacerbated destitute conditions caused by the civil recent war that had just barely reached a cease fire in 2019, reaching the largest levels of food insecurity since the countries independence in 2011. But when the project comes up here they got relieved and gain hope in life and for all these developments I appreciate GEMS for the project and if not this GEMS we cannot survive last year 2020.

Now that we’ve finished the first harvest of our 25-acre flood-resistant farm in Majok Goi we wanted to interview a few of the farmers to understand their experience over the last year. Read the transcript (translated from Dinka to English) of our project director Luka Garang’s interview with Aguil Tong Kuany below.

Over 8,000 pounds of Sorghum in Our First Harvest

Luka just finished delivering another 205 goats to the villages of Malek Palaual and War Agany in Aweil, South Sudan. Similar to last weeks delivery, these goats come at a very precarious period of the hunger gap between harvests.

Luka just delivered another 200 goats to the village of Marol Diluit, in Aweil East County. As you can see in the pictures we still need to work with Luka and the group on practicing social distancing.

We are so incredibly blessed to have Luka Garang on our team. He identifies the most vulnerable people in every county and helps coordinate the delivery of your goats.

Hey Everyone, Just wanted to give everyone a quick update. Our Majok Goi project is going great. We can’t believe how well the workers are progressing. The ground is incredibly hard, but our people are very tough.

Luka has been on a roll these past couple months! He has been able to deliver over 800 goats with 200 going to Jaac, Aweil North County.
